The first thing you'll notice about Rotorua is the air. The pungent smell of sulphur signals your arrival at this thermal city of geysers and bubbling mud. Fortunately, you become accustomed to the aroma fairly quickly and the natural wonders of this city are more than enough distraction. I recommend at least 2 full days, there is quite alot to see and do and at the end of it treat yourself to a soak in a hot thermal pool. Situated approx. 2 1/2 hr easy drive from Auckland, a stop at the Glow Worm Caves at Waitomo can be slotted into the itinerary if you have enough time and an interest in fluorescent worms. Rotorua is the home of the Maori Hangi, a traditional feast. Many hotels have nightly dinner shows and whilst the entertainment is excellent, traditional Maori food is an acquired taste.
